Pick up where you left off

How to find your place in a book again

If you put a book down and cannot remember where you stopped, you do not have to start over. Look for the last scene you recognise, reread a little around it, and use your saved reading position if you have one.

Start with the last moment you remember

Think of the last character, place, or event that feels familiar. Skim chapter titles or the final pages you remember, then read forward until the story feels continuous again. If a whole chapter seems familiar, move ahead a little at a time rather than guessing a precise page.

Use a bookmark or saved position

Check the bookmark, history, or reading position in the app or ebook you were using. Read Sentence saves your position as you move through a book. If you were reading as a guest, progress stays in that browser and may be removed if its site data is cleared. A saved position helps you return, while a quick reread confirms the story around it.

Reread enough to recover the thread

A few surrounding paragraphs can bring back who is speaking and why the scene matters. If the passage is dense, read a full page for context. If you prefer a smaller step, move through the same text sentence by sentence. Choose the view that makes the next page feel clear.

Make the next return easier

Before putting the book down, leave it open at a natural pause or add a bookmark. You can also note a character or event in a few words. Keep the note brief so getting back to the book stays easier than organising it.

Common questions

Should I start the book again if I forgot where I was?

Usually, try the last scene or chapter you remember first. Reread a few pages around that point and move forward until the story feels familiar. Start again only if you want to revisit the book from the beginning.

Will a reading app remember my place?

It depends on the app and whether you are signed in. Sentence saves your position as you read. Guest progress stays in the same browser, and clearing its site data can remove it.

How can I remember where I stopped next time?

Use a bookmark or let your reading app save your position. Leaving the book at a natural pause can also make it easier to resume.
